CURATOR'S NOTE
This sculptural ceramic bloom is built using nerikomi, a technique where patterned clay is layered and folded to carry the pattern through the material itself rather than painting it on. Dozens of individually shaped petals, each carrying the bold black-and-white patterning, are gathered into a dense, textured sphere, punctuated by small raised black studs at each fold. It sits on a soft blue-green glazed base, offering quiet contrast to the graphic intensity above. A striking, sculptural presence for a console, shelf or as a standalone statement piece.
MATERIAL & CRAFT
Stoneware clay, hand-built using the nerikomi technique.
The artist builds the pattern by layering different coloured clays together, then slices and shapes them so the black-and-white design runs through the material itself, not painted on. Individually shaped petals are gathered into a dense sphere and finished with a glazed base.
